Middlesbrough
Founded: 1876
Ground: Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough
Manager: Gareth Southgate
1986 found Middlesbrough facing a dead end. The final game of the season saw Boro relegated to the Third Division, their extreme financial woes was a major problem for the club. The £350,000 required for the Football League registration was not available, and the club was 10 minutes away from folding permanently. Steve Gibson was the person who raised the capital just in time and signalled not only Boro's survival, but a new direction for the club. Two straight promotions brought Boro right back into the spotlight, and since then aside for a minor setback in 1996/97, the Riverside Stadium hosts Premier League matches. Gareth Southgate took over from Steve McClaren at the start of 2006/07 season, and enjoyed an uninspiring mid-table season, much the same as he has in the 2007/08 season.
Southgate claims he can make Boro a top-4 club, and... well... we actually find it hard to believe. With the surprising departure of keeper Mark Schwarzer and hard working George Boating, we think he'll be more than happy if his side will keep away from any relegation battles.
Bottom Line: Southgate will have to make sure his defense is strong. This is the key for a nice and easy season.
