Aston Villa is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in English Football history. Since it was founded back in 1874, the Villains have won numerous honours, including 7 league titles and one memorable European Cup, beating Bayern Munich in the 1982 final.
Unfortunately for the supporters, the good old days were replaced by years of instability, which, in turn, were replaced with many years of boring mid-table finishes.
Martin O'Neill, with the backing of owner Randy Lerner, was able to transform Villa into a top-6 club. Still, instead of getting ready for their European challenge, Villa focused on solving the transfer saga of skipper Gareth Barry. Up to this point Berry is still a Villa player, as Liverpool cooled their interest in him. This should not stop O'Neill making some good buys during the summer, to bolster up his squad. Steve Sidwell was the first to come and rumors tell that Blackburn's Brad Friedel has already agreed personal terms.
After this hectic summer, if Villa will be able to get into the group stage of the UEFA Cup and root themselves in one of the first six spots in the Premiership - They will be more than happy.
Bottom Line: Villa's season depends on the successes of Martin O'Neill in the transfer market.
