Everton
Founded: 1878
Ground: Goodison Park, Liverpool
Manager: David Moyes
For Everton supporters born after the 1969/70 league title win, the 80's are the years to remember. The constant top-flight rivalry with Liverpool FC, accompanied by two glorious League titles and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1985, gave the supporters something to cheer about. But the 1986-1987 title was to signal the end of those wonderful years.
For the past 15 years Everton ceased to be a title challenger, and swapped the top-flight glory for relegation battles. The Toffees went from bad to worse, and when Howard Kendall managed to avoid relegation only thanks to a superior goal difference over Bolton, the glory days were well and truly forgotten.
In 2002 David Moyes took the role of manager, with Everton in real danger of relegation. Moyes succeeded in steering the club to a safe finish in 15th place, and from that moment on – a steady progression has been made.
Everton enjoyed a good season, finishing 5th and winning the UEFA Cup place, but David Moyes should think of making one more step forward, as Everton proved to be more than capable of winning a Champions League spot. Holding the services of Mikel Arteta is crucial if this goal is to be reached.
Bottom Line: Everton showed a lot of fighting spirit. If able to add some finesse to this, they might pip Liverpool to get to the much desired 4th place.
