Preview: Doncaster vs. Southend
14-May-2008
Doncaster Rovers must be the most disappointed side in League One. All they needed to do was to beat lowly Cheltenham on the last day of the season to ensure automatic promotion, but they failed to do so, allowing Nottingham Forest to storm past them into 2nd place. This means, of course, Doncaster will have to reach the promised land of the Championship through the playoffs.
The 1st leg between Doncaster and Southend United ended in a hard fought 0-0 draw, which was a good result for the visiting team. This means that Doncaster do not need to make any complicated calculations – what they need to do is win the 2nd leg at home, taking place at the Keepmoat Stadium to progress into the final.
There are no easy matches at this stage, but throughout the season Doncaster looked a far better team than Southend. The Shrimpers are well capable to winning this match, but as we see things – Doncaster are not only the better side, but they also deserve to qualify to the Championship for the first time in their history. This is why they will win this all-important match.
